Streak Freezes: How to Protect Your Progress Without Guilt

Life doesn't pause for your habits

You're on a 45-day streak. Then you get the flu. Or your flight gets cancelled. Or your kid needs you. Should all that progress disappear because of one bad day?

No. That's what freezes are for.

What is a streak freeze?

A freeze is a protective "pass" that keeps your streak alive for one period (day, week, or month) without requiring a check-in. Your streak counter stays where it is โ€” it doesn't go up, but it doesn't reset either.

How freezes work in EmberTrack

  • Auto-freeze: If you miss a single check-in and the streak has reached your auto-freeze minimum (see below), EmberTrack automatically applies a freeze (if you have one available). No action needed.
  • Freeze bank: You get new freezes every month. How many depends on your difficulty mode: Free accounts are on Hard (3 a month, up to 9 banked); Pro accounts can choose Easy (10), Medium (6), Hard (3), or Extreme (0), always banking up to 3ร— the monthly amount.
  • Refund on catch-up: If you check in for "yesterday" after a freeze was applied, the freeze gets refunded and your check-in replaces it.
  • Two-miss rule: If you miss two consecutive periods without checking in, your streak resets and the freeze is refunded. This prevents indefinite coasting on freezes.

The auto-freeze threshold

In Account โ†’ Auto-freeze, you can set the minimum streak length that auto-freeze protects. The default is 30, so a 5-day streak breaks on a miss while a 35-day streak is protected. You can set it anywhere from 0 (protect every streak) to 365 โ€” or turn auto-freeze off entirely.

Strategy: treat freezes like insurance

The best approach to freezes:

  1. Don't plan to use them โ€” they're for genuine emergencies
  2. Check in retroactively when possible โ€” within the forgiveness window you can still check in for the previous period
  3. Review your freeze usage โ€” frequent freezing might mean your cadence is wrong
  4. A stricter mode for growth โ€” on Pro, if you want real accountability, pick Hard or Extreme instead of Easy and live with fewer freezes

Freezes โ‰  failure

Using a freeze isn't cheating. It's being realistic about life while maintaining long-term consistency. A 100-day streak with 3 freezes is still 97 days of showing up.
